This offseason, I will be diving into the notable moves made and their impact to their individual teams and potential fantasy baseball implications.
The Tigers continued their bargain bin shopping with another quick strike by signing SS Jordy Mercer to a 1 year deal worth $5.25M with $250k in possible incentives.
With the departure of Jose Iglesias, the Tigers were clearly in the market for a SS. With the team having little hope of being relevant in 2019 and limited payroll flexibility, they were destined to sign someone of this mold. While he isn’t as good defensively as Iglesias, he has some pop to add to the lineup. Obviously, don’t expect much from him in fantasy… even in the deepest of leagues.
I think Mercer was smart to grab the money early here, rather than hope to be some team’s stopgap to a rookie/backup plan to Machado. Here he is guaranteed playing time and can hope to rebuild his value in 2019.
